Lamotrigine
- Soluble in DMSO
- MF: C9H7Cl2N5
- MW: 256.09
Description
Lamotrigine is an anticonvulsant that preferentially stabilizes the inactivated state of voltage-gated sodium channels, thereby limiting repetitive neuronal firing and reducing release of excitatory neurotransmitters including glutamate.
Lamotrigine is widely used as a reference compound for sodium-channel-dependent excitability, synaptic glutamate release and seizure pharmacology. Its mechanism is distinct from direct glutamate receptor antagonism.
Key Features
- Use-dependent voltage-gated sodium channel inhibitor
- Reduces repetitive neuronal firing
- Decreases presynaptic release of glutamate and aspartate
- Clinically established anticonvulsant and mood-stabilizing pharmacology
Applications
- Voltage-gated sodium channel studies
- Seizure and neuronal excitability models
- Presynaptic glutamate release assays
- Anticonvulsant and mood-disorder research
