Akt
Akt/PKB protein kinase (EC 2.7.11.1), also belongs to the cAMP-dependent protein kinase A, -G, and -C (AGC) super family of protein kinases that share structural homology within their catalytic domain and have the similar mechanism of activation[1]. The serine/threonine kinase Akt, also known as protein kinase B (PKB), is a central node in cell signaling downstream of growth factors, cytokines, and other cellular stimuli. The Akt/PKB family comprises three highly homologous members known as PKBα/Akt1, PKBβ/Akt2 and PKBγ/Akt3 in mammalian cells. The enzyme contributes to activation of a wide variety of cellular processes, including cell survival, growth, proliferation, glucose uptake, metabolism, and angiogenesis[2]. Aberrant loss or gain of Akt activation underlies the pathophysiological properties of a variety of diseases, including type-2 diabetes and cancer. As is well known, Akt/PKB also acts a prominent downstream effector of PI3K signaling pathway, and is activated by Class 1A and Class 1B PI3-Kinases.
