Description
AICAR is a cell-permeable AMPK activator that is converted intracellularly to ZMP, an AMP mimetic. It increases AMPK phosphorylation, inactivates HMG-CoA reductase and markedly suppresses fatty-acid and sterol synthesis without substantially perturbing ATP, ADP or AMP levels.
AMPK coordinates energy sensing, lipid metabolism, differentiation and stress adaptation. AICAR is a widely used tool for studying AMPK pathway activation, metabolic reprogramming and differentiation mechanisms in leukemia and neural stem cell models.
