Description

AZD1656 is a potent, selective glucokinase activator that increases the glucose sensitivity and catalytic activity of glucokinase in pancreatic β-cells and hepatocytes. By enhancing glucose-dependent insulin secretion and hepatic glucose utilization, AZD1656 modulates two central components of systemic glucose homeostasis.

AZD1656 is used to investigate glucokinase biology, glucose-stimulated insulin secretion, hepatic glucose metabolism and the pharmacology of small-molecule glucokinase activation. The compound advanced into clinical studies for type 2 diabetes, making it a useful translational probe for evaluating both acute glucose lowering and adaptive responses during sustained glucokinase activation.

Key Features

  • Selective glucokinase activator
  • Enhances glucose-dependent insulin secretion
  • Promotes hepatic glucose utilization and glucose sensing
  • Orally active translational glucokinase probe

Applications

  • Glucokinase enzyme and glucose-sensing studies
  • Pancreatic β-cell function and insulin secretion assays
  • Hepatic glucose metabolism research
  • Type 2 diabetes and metabolic-disease models
