Fenfluramine hydrochloride
- Parent CAS: 458-24-2
- Soluble in water and DMSO
- MF: C12H16F3N.HCl
- MW: 267.72
Description
Fenfluramine hydrochloride is a serotonergic agent that increases extracellular 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) primarily by promoting transporter-mediated serotonin release and reducing reuptake. Its active metabolite norfenfluramine also engages several serotonin receptor subtypes.
Fenfluramine is used to investigate serotonergic neurotransmission, seizure susceptibility and network excitability. Because its pharmacology includes both monoamine release and direct receptor-mediated effects, experiments should distinguish parent compound, metabolite and receptor contributions.
Key Features
- Serotonin-releasing agent
- Increases extracellular 5-HT
- Parent compound and norfenfluramine have complementary serotonergic actions
- Centrally active
Applications
- Serotonin-release studies
- Monoamine-transporter research
- Seizure and network-excitability models
- Serotonergic receptor studies
- Behavioral neuroscience
