Genipin
- Soluble in DMSO and EtOH
- MF: C11H14O5
- MW: 226.23
Description
Genipin is a natural iridoid compound and uncoupling protein 2 inhibitor that reduces UCP2-mediated mitochondrial proton leak and enhances glucose-stimulated insulin secretion.
Genipin increases mitochondrial membrane potential and ATP production in pancreatic β-cells, linking UCP2 inhibition to KATP-channel closure and insulin release. Independently, its reactive aglycone chemistry makes it a widely used protein and biomaterial cross-linker.
Key Features
- Inhibits UCP2-mediated mitochondrial proton leak
- Enhances glucose-stimulated insulin secretion
- Modulates mitochondrial coupling and ATP production
- Natural cross-linker for proteins and biopolymers
Applications
- UCP2 and mitochondrial bioenergetics studies
- Pancreatic β-cell and insulin-secretion research
- Metabolic stress and diabetes models
- Protein, collagen, gelatin and chitosan cross-linking
