- MW: 209.72
Description
MPTP is a dopaminergic neurotoxin used to model Parkinsonian neurodegeneration through selective injury of nigrostriatal dopamine neurons. Its metabolite MPP+ disrupts mitochondrial function in susceptible dopaminergic cells.
MPTP-based models are widely used to study dopamine neuron vulnerability, substantia nigra degeneration, mitochondrial toxicity and Parkinson's disease-related motor pathology. The compound should be handled only under appropriate controlled laboratory conditions.
MPTP hydrochloride is the preferred water-soluble salt form of MPTP for laboratory use.
Key Features
- Dopaminergic neurotoxin
- Models nigrostriatal dopamine neuron degeneration
- Linked to mitochondrial dysfunction through MPP+
- Relevant for Parkinsonian neurodegeneration research
- Water soluble
Applications
- Parkinson's disease model studies
- Dopamine neuron toxicity research
- Mitochondrial dysfunction and neurodegeneration assays
- Neuroprotective compound screening
Remark: Given its potent neurotoxicity, MPTP requires careful sourcing and controlled laboratory handling. Axon Medchem supplies MPTP hydrochloride, the non-lipophilic and stable salt form of MPTP, together with appropriate documentation to support responsible research use.
