Description
BAM15 is a mitochondrial protonophore that functions as a mitochondrial oxidative-phosphorylation uncoupler without directly depolarizing the plasma membrane. It dissipates the mitochondrial proton gradient, increasing oxygen consumption and substrate oxidation while decreasing coupling efficiency and ATP production.
Compared with FCCP, BAM15 can support a higher maximal respiratory rate and shows a wider experimental window in several cell systems. It is used to investigate mitochondrial bioenergetics, nutrient oxidation, metabolic adaptation and ischemia–reperfusion injury, and has shown in vivo activity in models of obesity and insulin resistance.
